Shihan Kurt Van Sickle Biography:

Kurt Van Sickle began his Martial Art study in 1970 at the Oregon Martial Art Center.

He earned his Junior Black belt in Late 1975 in the Art of Shotokan Karate under O’Sensei Nakayama of the JKA.

He studied Okinawan Butokukai, Aikido and Boxing from 1974 to 1976.

He began studying Tracy American Kenpo from Ken Lickar in 1976. He earned his 1st degree Black Belt in 1979 under Al Tracy and Joe McLean.

He opened the Lake Oswego Academy of Kenpo Karate in 1978. During the following years, he studied privately with Sifu Al Tracy. He was promoted to 4th Degree black belt in 1986, the youngest person to earn this designation in the Tracy system.

In 1982 while attending Portland State University, Shihan Van Sickle fought for the PSU Tae Kwon Do Team under Master Choi. He earned his 1st degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do in 1982.

Between 1981 and 1983 Shihan Van Sickle fought 3 kickboxing matches.

Shihan Van Sickle Met Hanshi Bruce Juchnik in 1982 and has remained a life long student of Kosho Shorei Ryu Kempo and its affiliated family of arts. Shihan Van Sickle was given the Responsibility of Shihan of the Kai and the rank of 5th degree Black Belt in October of 2006.

Along the way, Shihan Van Sickle has studied Chi Lin Pai Gung Fu, Mu Shu Shindin Ryu Iai Do, Kun Lun Pai Silat and Shiatsu Do.

Over the course of Shihan Van Sickle’s 35 year study of the Arts, He has owned and operated the Academy of Kempo Karate since 1978. Shihan Van Sickle has instructed nearly 1500 students.
